As one of the most significant ancient port cities of the Mediterranean, Side continues to reveal its secrets through ongoing archaeological excavations. Under the scientific leadership of Prof. Dr. Feriştah Alanyalı, Head of the Side Excavations, this long-running project—one of Türkiye’s most extensive—continues to shed light on thousands of years of history with comprehensive research.
One of the key focal points of the excavation efforts is the Bath-Gymnasium complex, which stands out with its architectural and cultural traces from the Roman Period and Late Antiquity. Excavations in the South Stoa section of the structure have unearthed eight statues—life-sized and larger—that are believed to be connected to the Gerousia, the council of elders of the ancient city. Supported by epigraphic documents and inscriptions, these findings reveal that the structure served not only as a bath, but also as an educational center for the youth of Side in antiquity. In this context, the Side Gymnasium holds special significance as the city’s center of learning.
Prof. Dr. Alanyalı emphasizes that Side is one of the rare ancient cities that not only thrived in Antiquity but also continues to exist today in harmony with modern life and cultural continuity. As a place where the ancient city and contemporary life coexist and enrich one another, Side stands out as a model for sustainable cultural heritage management.
